When you arrive for your Kybella appointment, we will take “before” images of you. Once you’re settled in for your actual treatment, you will be given numbing cream underneath your chin, followed by a temporary tattoo dot grid to help guide your specialist.
You can expect roughly 10 to 50 injections over the course of several minutes. You will feel them, but discomfort will be very minimal due to the numbing cream. You may also feel a burning sensation which is the actual chemical, but you will be given ice packs to help with this. Most patients find the treatment very tolerable. Afterward, you will be wrapped with a compression bandage, and your chin may feel slightly sore. Kybella generally works best after 2 to 4 treatments, spaced six weeks apart.
Most patients experience swelling after their Kybella treatment, which may make you feel like your double chin is actually growing, but it’s not. This is common, and part of the process. Once your chin has completely “gone down”, the targeted fat cells are gone permanently. The swelling will peak about 24 hours after your first Kybella treatment, and will last anywhere from two days to a few weeks. Over the recovery time, you may also experience bruising, burning, or numbness.
It’s important to be aware that results from Kybella, although significant, can take a little while to reach — anywhere between 2 to 4 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. For most patients, results are noticeable after 2 to 3 sessions. The number of treatments you’ll need will be determined by the amount of fat that is being removed. Once you’re pleased with the outcome, there is no need for maintenance treatments. Once Kybella has destroyed the fat cells, they are permanently gone.
