What is PRP hair restoration?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) hair restoration is a hair loss treatment that utilizes your body’s own plasma to promote new hair growth. Within our blood, there is plasma. Within the plasma are platelets. And within those platelets are growth factors, which grow cells and repair tissue. Over a series of treatments administered via PRP hair injections, these growth factors can help men and women who have certain hair conditions — especially androgenetic alopecia — to restore hair growth.

How does PRP hair restoration work?

Platelets are like our body’s very own ambulance. When we become cut or wounded, our platelets rush to the rescue by preventing the bleeding. This helps the injury heal as quickly as possible. This same “rescue team” can be applied to dormant hair follicles to stimulate brand new hair growth. They work by encouraging inactive hair follicles to begin an active growth phase.

During a standard PRP hair restoration session, blood is taken from a vein and placed inside a device that separates the red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma, rich with platelets and growth factors, is then added into a syringe, which is then administered into the scalp — where it goes to work re-growing hair.

When you arrive for your PRP hair restoration treatment, your scalp will be cleansed, and you will be given a topical anesthetic to help minimize any discomfort. First, a small amount of blood will be taken from one of your veins.

That blood will be put into a device that spins until the red blood cells are separated from the plasma. Once separated, the plasma is then placed inside a syringe so that it can be directly injected into targeted areas of the scalp.

These PRP hair injections are reported to be very tolerable with the help of the topical anesthetic. The treatment length varies from patient to patient, but typically takes about an hour and a half.

Recovery

PRP hair injections allow you to return to your regular daily activities directly after your appointment. However, some patients do experience soreness, swelling, itching, or pinpoint bleeding at the injection sites. These side effects will subside quickly.
