How laser hair removal works
Laser hair removal works by harnessing the abilities of laser light energy. The laser delivers a powerful light that is absorbed by pigment in the hair. This converts the light energy into heat, which damages the hair follicles and prevents them from being able to grow hair anymore. Your hair won’t fall out immediately, but it will after a multiple treatments — typically about five.

Before appointment
- Avoid sun exposure for three days before your appointment.
- For six weeks prior to your appointment, do not tweeze or wax any hair in the area that will be treated.
- Shave within 24 hours to three days of your appointment using a clean, brand-new razor.
During appointment
- Depending on the area you’re having treated, you will get undressed.
- You will make yourself comfortable on a medical chair.
- You will be provided protective glasses to protect your eyes from the laser beam.
- The area to be treated will be cleansed with wipes.
- Any extra hairs will be shaved.
- The lasering will begin. Your technician will make sure you’re feeling okay as they work.
Many patients describe the sensation of getting laser hair removal as feeling like a hot rubber band being snapped on their skin, or tiny pin prick. The feeling isn’t exactly comfortable, but any pain is minimal and very tolerable. Many lasers also emit a cooling effect to help with discomfort.
Recovery
After your laser hair removal treatment, we recommend using aloe vera on any areas that may feel hot. There are a few things you should avoid to heal properly and get the best results. The things that you should avoid include:
- Extended sun exposure (for a week after treatment)
- Anything that will cause you to sweat, such as exercise, saunas, baths, etc. (for 24 hours after treatment)
- Plucking, tweezing, or waxing out any hairs that you see.
- Other skin treatments (for two weeks after treatment)
- Puncturing the skin in any way
- Hot water (for at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment)
- Makeup or perfume near the treated area (for at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment)
